Can you actually pull more sumo?

My gym doesn't have one. I only get to use one at meets at the moment.
Do you feel stronger when you pull at meets with the deadlift bar? I've always wondered if pulling with a stiff bar allows you to pull more when you switch to a deadlift bar.

I'm experiencing some discomfort in piriformous. I do lots of mobility work. But it seems like it's an issue from when I tweaked my hamstring. Gonna see my PT gets a neuromuscular massage and continue to stretch and foam roll. The joys of getting older. Lol.

Stretching, massages, foam rolling are all good and I should do more of them. At 50 training smarter is important as well. Figuring out what will get me to a meet as healthy and strong as possible is an equation that constantly needs tweaking.

I'm not there yet brother but not far. My time spent in the gym is long. I go through my SMR routine, foam roll. I have to do lots of thoracic extension work. Banded pull a parts banded Shoulder dislocations. It's a 45 minute virtual. Lol. But like you said to stay safe and to try and prevent injury these things are necessary for all of us. Especially those that are a little older.

I'm not getting notifications for anything on this thread for some reason. Yes, it does feel significantly easier. Not sure how much, but it helps. Obviously the more weight you're doing the more it helps.

My gym doesn't have a deadlift bar. But the gym at my school has a few. They just don't have a stiff bar for squats or bench. I will probably by a squat and take it to my small gym and lock it up in the closet. The gym owner is cool with me and a few other guys that powerlifter. We are trying to get him to get a few more specialty bars. But not money there lift to build strength.

What do you mean no stiff bar? What do they use now? I'd consider pretty much any non deadlift bar a stiff bar, especially the thicker ones.

The gym at school caters more to Oly lifting so the bars are whippy. They have one Texas bar that is pretty solid. So it works fine. IMO opinion oly lifters benefit tremendously from whippy bars. I was watching Dee Ford from the US weight lifting team squat and he had the timing of the whipping up as soon as he hit the hole. Seems like the whip of the bar if timed correctly assists some coming out of the hole.

I could see that. I've never tried using one for anything other than DL. In my experience you don't get much whip from a deadlift bar until high 300's and it's not much until high 400's or more. It might not feel much different unless you were going fairly heavy on squats.

At 405 the bar whip on a front squat becomes very noticeable. For me it was almost necessary to time the whip and catch the rebound out of the hole.

I believe fast descending squaters benefit from the whip once they learn the timing.

I've been told it's a rotator cuff thing. I was pulling sumo with shoulders rolled forward a little and got some major pain around the back of my armpit. It doesn't affect strength, but it's excruciating. It first popped up last summer, took a few weeks off, hurt it again the first day back, took two months off leading into my last meet and did box squats and good mornings and still managed to PR on meet day. After the meet i took ten weeks off and hurt it again the first day back and now I've been off about two months again. Gonna try again the first of next month. Light for sure and maybe conventional for awhile.

Damn man. I'm sorry to hear that. I feel your pain. Its ironic that the subject of groin injury is being brought up. I had a similar trouble as you are talking about, only with my groin. To this day it still makes me nervous when I pull sumo. If I feel tight at all in the area after warm ups, I just call it a day. Its just too easy to injure it once again. I hope it gets healed up soon brother. I know it is frustrating as hell. Btw, out of curiosity, do you use a double over, or over under grip?

Thanks. I use mixed grip with anything over 300-400 depending on how I'm feeling that day.

Does the injured rotator happen to be on the side of the supinated hand? I had rotator trouble many years ago when deadlifting, and I decided to reverse my grip. It took some getting accustomed to, as well as dropping bar weight, but after a short time my pain faded.
Im just looking for optimistic ideas, and I hope it isn't a serious long term injury man.

This is weird, but I use a different mixed grip on sumo than I do conventional as my preferred one for going heavy. For conventional I do right hand under and sumo the opposite. It's on the right side, so no.

I wasn't going heavy when it happened though. Just doing 15 sets of 2 with 475, not quite speed work, but close. I would have been alternating my grip each set when it happened. I was just tired that day and not staying tight, I guess. I think I was 8-10 sets in when it happened.

My friend that's got a degree in exercise science and is currently in medical school seems to think it was started from having overpowering front delts from benching and then set off with pulling sumo with my shoulders forward. He recommended rotator cuff work and rehabbing it with various exercises, stretches and massage.

Just fell with 520lbs forgot to put up slings luckily my spotter caught the bar enough for me to not absorb all the weight i fell forward little banged up but im alright lol
