Meso Powerlifting Corner

We all know powerlifting isn't for the faint of heart. Training up to my first meet at 50 and leading the national rankings in both total and bench when I re tore my left bicep tendon today.

First time I tore it several years back was a full tear at the elbow which was surgically repaired . Today was at the shoulder. Hoping to have surgery before the end of the week and get back on the platform this fall to hit my original goals.
Hate to hear this. The way we push ourselves we always walk a tight rope. Hoping for a quick full recovery for you mp

Thanks brother. If there is an upside it is that a whole slew of other minor and not so minor injuries will be given the time they need to heal that they otherwise probably wouldn't have been given.

Sorry to hear that, MP. Did you get hurt at a meet or just in training?

Just training. The ironic thing is that since the original bicep tendon surgery I only do 4 or 5 sets of curls once a week just to keep the bicep tendons healthy. I was on my final set today with 115 pounds and on the sixth rep I felt in snap and roll up towards the shoulder.

Well, I hope you recover quickly and get after those 50+ rankings. I really hate it for you.

Ive had bicep problems for years , I just dont enjoy working them like I did when I was younger and avoid direct work alot of times . Heal fast brother ;)

I'm the same way. I used to regularly do barbell curls with 135+. Now I do very little direct bicep work and 115 is as heavy as go. It was obviously too heavy today.

So today I was supposed to work up to 5x5 @305 benching. Needed a boost after the torn bicep on Sunday so I said fuck it and worked up as planned. Got all 25 reps. A few weren't paused but I will take it.

This accomplished exactly nothing as I will be facing surgery soon and will have to start back at square one after but sometimes when I'm frustrated moving heavy things helps and today was one of those times. Below is the final set.

Looked easy. Any idea on how long the recovery will be?

They say 3 to 4 months to resume normal activity. I pushed it harder than I should have the first time as I was a bit obsessed to get back to normal lifting. I did a 3 board 300 pound bench 6 weeks post surgery while wearing a brace to restrict the arm's movement.

Probably lucky I didn't re tear it. I will go slower this time but still much faster than the surgeon or PT would approve. My plan is to do a lot of high rep low weight sets starting about six weeks from surgery date and gradually work up over time as long as the bicep feels good.
