Meso Powerlifting Corner

Figured I’d drop in this thread since I’m making the switch... competing in 10 weeks in a bench only competition in the 220 pound class.. opening with 365, progressing to 385 and finishing with 405. Lots of pages here to read, but figured I’d drop in and leave a comment/intro. Hello :-)

How many times during a prep and how close to a meet can you test your maxes?
How advanced is the trainee? That’s the real question. My friend I coached for a meet recently “tested” maxes a few weeks out and PR’d over those on squat and dL but not bench because he took 9 days off bench going into a meet. Perrin is right. Testing a true max in a prep isn’t ideal but beginners and some intermediates can get away with it

Yeah, more advanced you are the longer your training cycles should be. Beginners can just train normal up to a meet and deload a couple days before and be good to go.

I noticed john haack does high bar even in comp. Pretty narrow stance toes really not pointed out. Does this have to with the fact he pulls conventional? Like you if you low bar wide stance should you pull sumo?

Not always, but there's definitely trends to it. Here's an article about it.

Haack is and exception not really a rule. He been asked about his squat and he says that’s just what’s comfortable. There’s many lifters who deadlift sumo and squat with a pretty normal stance. I can’t think of many who squat very wide and deadlift conventional.

I'm not a powerlifter, but I personally squat fairly wide (wider than shoulder width for sure) and deadlift very narrow stance conventional. Not Rob Kearney narrow, but kinda close to that.

@Perrin Aybara
That was a great article. My question was inspired by something jamal browner said in a video. He said that most people switch to sumo because they end up having lower back problems and it was something to do with training the squat. Just yesterday I had a back strain that built up for a few weeks and nearly put me on thr floor. I thought i fucked up my spine so I got it xrayed. I think the problem was that I did a wider grip to save my elbow tendons which have been effecting my pressing and leaning too far forward as a result of putting more of the weight directly on my delts.

Im mostly surprised he doesnt turn his toes out! I defenitely dont have the hip mobility for that
