Meso Powerlifting Corner

I'm not a powerlifter, but I personally squat fairly wide (wider than shoulder width for sure) and deadlift very narrow stance conventional. Not Rob Kearney narrow, but kinda close to that.
Idk if your username is related to your sport but I have definetly seen strongmen have a similar if not identical stance from deadlift to squat. They do like a sumo conventional

Yea I am an amateur strongman competitor.

There are some guys that go wide stance on deadlift, but since sumo isn't allowed in strongman (no sumo deadlifting is damn near the only rule) so those guys have to grip the bar with their hands outside of the legs/knees.

When I deadlift there is probably only 6" between my heels, but when I squat it's somewhere around 2-2.5 feet between my heels. Rob Kearney is a 900+ lb deadlifter and he is a pro strongman. He damn near has his heels touching.

I'm not an elite level squatter or deadlifter, but the two lifts combined is probably around 1200 lbs

I think a lot of the SHW’s deadlift wide like strongman but there’s always someone who defies the norm and then is the atwr holder like Dan bell. He has his feet about touching on conventional deadlift. Here’s the more interesting thing to me. The big guys lest say 125kg and up, but for sure 140kg and up so many of them have a squat that’s significantly higher than their deadlift. possibly with the exception of maybe one or two of these guys. Obviously mobility is a factor at that point and just getting into position is part of the battle. So what ever is comfortable for them is the answer.

Its the blubber bounce. Give extra mechanical advantage haha. All the raw 1k squatters have some junk in the trunk to support the bar. Soon you will start seeing silicone squatting suits, mark my words!

Don’t they do the metric system in snow Mexico?
I know in Mexico actual they do, fucking gas was in liters and pesos. The math on that was terrible , I just walked to the cashier and gave em $20 usd.

Yup, KGs, KMs, Liters, etc. However I grew up in lbs inches, only time I use metric is KMs as opposed to miles

I don't really even why you would want to bother with hook grip

In theory you'd have even lat activation and no chance of helicopter effect. If you have superhuman pain tolerance or maybe you could have your nerves surgically removed it wouldn't be too bad.

It really affects my bar speed. I think 530x1 was my best hook grip in my very limited experience with it years ago. Too hardcore for me.

I don't really hook grip all that much, but I do occasionally. I actually only trained up to 225 with hook grip for about 3-4 weeks, then one day just fucking around I hit 405 for a single with hook grip and it didn't feel any worse on my thumbs than 225.

OBVIOUSLY I am not saying that is anywhere near 1000 lbs or even 530, but I think (at least for me) I could train hook grip very little and still get a lot of pain tolerance out of it.

I have hooked to 475, but took a break from it. Tried using it again and even 315 is too much. Switched to mixed weight seems to feel lighter in my hands now

The pain kinda goes up exponentially with weight. Call it rate of perceived pain lol. But yes people say it gets easier with use.

I believe Yury Belkin has the highest comp deadlift of 981. I know cailer woolam was getting close to 1,000 but I've never seen him do it raw.

Here's top comp deadlifts according to Open Powerlifting. Not familiar with a fed called Hardcore.

Do you know if any of the top ones were hook grip? Browner will be #1 soon in my opinion. It's just a matter of time. He'll be the lightest to pull 1000+ too.

That krzysztof is one too watch too. He might pull 1,000 in comp at 220.
