Great to see things looking up for you @Perrin Aybara and congrats on the new house. Bet you can’t wait to get back to a real gym. Will you still set up a home gym at your house for those times you can’t make it to the gym?
Yes, I'm going to get all my home gym stuff to the new place and improve on it gradually.
At what weight do you start using wrist straps?
Are they really necessary? Would your grip eventually just work up to the weight?
for deadlifts of course....
Do you use a different grip depending on straps vs without straps?
I never used straps for years starting and I've never failed a deadlift because of grip. Up to 730lbs from 3" blocks and 755lbs on a trap bar with no straps. My grip always grew with my deadlift with no issues.
Around 600lbs or so for sets and reps with a deadlift bar can get mean on the hands. I've used straps for volume work just to save my hands a little. I use them for block pulls sometimes now for the same reason. You just don't want grip to become a weak point. But then again if you don't plan on competing in meets it doesn't really matter.
You'd always want double overhand with straps. There's absolutely no reason to do mixed grip with straps, the whole point of mixed is for better grip.
For BB purposes and if you're not planning on competing in powerlifting I'd say use them if you need them. Doing mostly mixed grip always with the same hand over I've got a little imbalance in my traps. If that matters to you and you don't want to use straps maybe switch which hand you do over and under sometimes.
