Perrin Aybara's Journey to an Elite Powerlifting Total

Great to see things looking up for you @Perrin Aybara and congrats on the new house. Bet you can’t wait to get back to a real gym. Will you still set up a home gym at your house for those times you can’t make it to the gym?

Yes, I'm going to get all my home gym stuff to the new place and improve on it gradually.

At what weight do you start using wrist straps?

Are they really necessary? Would your grip eventually just work up to the weight?

for deadlifts of course....

Do you use a different grip depending on straps vs without straps?

I never used straps for years starting and I've never failed a deadlift because of grip. Up to 730lbs from 3" blocks and 755lbs on a trap bar with no straps. My grip always grew with my deadlift with no issues.

Around 600lbs or so for sets and reps with a deadlift bar can get mean on the hands. I've used straps for volume work just to save my hands a little. I use them for block pulls sometimes now for the same reason. You just don't want grip to become a weak point. But then again if you don't plan on competing in meets it doesn't really matter.

You'd always want double overhand with straps. There's absolutely no reason to do mixed grip with straps, the whole point of mixed is for better grip.

For BB purposes and if you're not planning on competing in powerlifting I'd say use them if you need them. Doing mostly mixed grip always with the same hand over I've got a little imbalance in my traps. If that matters to you and you don't want to use straps maybe switch which hand you do over and under sometimes.

Ok thats great to know. Thanks.

Was gonna ask about the gym. How’s the setup? Did they actually want an interview? Lol

No, it was just to fill out paperwork. I think the owner is the only employee and he also works a full time job outside of the gym. Seems like it's one of those things he probably just breaks even with the gym and just does it because he likes it. Only $25 a month no contract.

But yeah, they have everything. Dungeon style with old, rusty iron plates. Belt squat machine like yours, reverse hyper, glute ham raise, every kind of bar you could think of except Buffalo bar. Deadlift, trap, football, camber, SSB, etc. Bands, chains, bench, block, all that kind of stuff. I'll get some pics next time I'm there and show you guys. It's perfect.

Also I guess since I messaged the owner on Facebook he checked out some of my comp videos and showed them to a couple of the guys there that compete. So they were expecting me and introduced themselves yesterday. They want me to do an unsanctioned local gym meet with them next month just for fun and I may do it since I'm close and get off fairly early now. Depends how early on a Saturday it is. At least can get a meet in this year that way.

That sounds perfect, man. Everything you’ll ever need.

-That’s pretty cool, too, that he was impressed enough to show your comps.

-Side note: Don’t call pedophiles who like that “Cuties” movie pedophiles, you’ll get banned for a month from Facebook. Ask me how I know. Lmao.

Yeah, it was unexpected. I've never had several members welcome me to a new gym like that before.

I don't really post much on Facebook. This forum is 90% of my social media activity. I put up my comp videos and that's about it. A few groups about retro gaming, books, and TV shows I like. Stuff where there's no religion, politics, or current events being discussed.

It's funny an uncensored steroid forum isn't 1/10 as toxic an environment as Facebook. I mean this place gets its fair share of dumb shit, but it's overall positive. Facebook comments sections makes you lose faith in humanity.
