Perrin Aybara's Journey to an Elite Powerlifting Total

Lifting went shitty. Had planned on taking this whole week off lower body, but couldn't resist doing deadlift today. Did regular instead of deficit because I thought it wouldn't hurt my knees. Worked up to 545x1 pretty easy. But it hurt my hip and felt like I was pulling something in my oblique. So I stopped there and went to my regular sets and the first one was super hard and hurt, so I stopped. My forearm is still hurting pretty bad. Pretty much my whole body feels like shit and hurts.

Did work up to an easy 385x1 slingshot single. Thought about 405x1, but no spot. Then did my 6x5 with 315lbs.

Welcome to the bench only club.

High bar squat
430x1 @8
405x6x2

Close grip bench
305x8x4

Sumo block pull
635x1 @7.5
530x4x4

Glute ham raise
5x7

Squat still not feeling great, but at least getting back up over 400lbs again. Wasn't ever grindy or anything, just doesn't feel good. Close grip bench felt really easy, barely rested between sets and 305lbs flew up. On block pulls my lower back was feeling beat up and decided to go sumo on those today. They felt really easy so I went ahead and worked up to an easy 635x1 before my regular sets. That's the first time I've handed 600+ in 4-5 months at least and I'm glad it still feels easy sumo. No hip pain either. For accessories I'm taking off upper body still till my forearm feels better.

Bench 355lbs for 6x2

Front squat 265lbs for 4x4

Short on time and only got that done. Bench felt shitty again, think I got too much close grip volume in on Monday. Weight is back up to 220lbs at least. Also started back on 5g of creatine a day on Monday, so I'm expecting all kinds of gains. Going into about three months on 50mg test e 3x a week. May finish this program off with some var in a month or so.

Forgot to post this the other day. Nothing special, but the first time I've pulled sumo in awhile and the first time handling anything remotely heavy this entire year after the hip injury. Pretty pleased with how easy it moved. Probably RPE 7-8.

How did the Hip feel after the pull?
compression shorts working I'd assume?

I went ahead and took the rest of this week off getting stuff lined up with the new house. Stayed here last night because the internet guy was coming this afternoon and I missed the call. Now it's rescheduled for Monday. Still waiting on the new furniture. Just have an air mattress here at the moment. Girlfriend isn't staying here yet since there's nothing to do, but I'm staying for the 20 minute drive to work instead of an hour.

There's a powerlifting gym not far from my work I think I'm gonna sign up with Monday. Looks decent from Google pics.

Right forearm seems almost completely healed. New route at work requires almost no heavy lifting, more specifically no dragging heavy totes with the hook and I think that's what was causing it. So should be good to go back to rows and pull ups next week.

Will be pretty busy moving some stuff here over the weekend and shopping for odds and ends. Thinking I'll still switch to five days of lifting Monday through Friday and have shorter workouts and hammer out more cardio and accessories that way.

I didn’t read about your injury until now, but it sounds eerily familiar... Dude, when I worked at Mclane and was using a hand cart all day, I couldn’t sleep most nights because my forearms would be on fire and my hands would be numb. The only thing that ever helped was letting my arms hang off the side of the bed...Blood flow or something? Idk, but that shit sucked. You seem right on point about the cause tho. I haven’t had the problem since I stopped working there

Yeah we deliver some things in plastic totes and we have these hooks to drag them with that you grasp in one hand. On my other route I'd stack a lot of stuff on them and drag it all together to save time. It was getting where my forearm hurt 24/7. I think it was just an overuse thing.

Just an update I called that powerlifting gym near my work Monday and no answer, went by yesterday yesterday on my way to work and the office was closed. Called again today and left them a message saying I wanted to join. Haven't lifted in a week, so this is the second longest I've went without since I started almost ten years ago. But I still have tons to do with the new house anyway. Hopefully they call me back by tomorrow and I can at least go in and hit all three lifts before the week is over. Haven't brought my home gym stuff here yet.

Got my new OLED TV mounted yesterday. The picture on this thing is insane. The Covid screwed me on furniture delivery though, gonna be next week at least. They said a month and this is week five. Got an air mattress and folding chairs and this folding table and that's it for now.

Got some laminate flooring from Lowes we're gonna put in over the weekend. I guess the silver lining of the furniture getting delayed we won't have to move it around to put the flooring in.

Start back lifting on Monday at the new gym, can't wait for that. Been almost two weeks off. I'm on week 12 out of 22 on this program. Might start up some var at a low dose in about a month to finish out strong.

Finally talked to someone at that gym. They do membership by appointment only, so I'm going Sunday afternoon at 2pm. I was about to sign up at an Anytime Fitness.
Is it by appointment for Covid, or they legitimately wanna interview you? -The latter would actually be cool, and make me wanna join more.

Great to see things looking up for you @Perrin Aybara and congrats on the new house. Bet you can’t wait to get back to a real gym. Will you still set up a home gym at your house for those times you can’t make it to the gym?

At what weight do you start using wrist straps?

Are they really necessary? Would your grip eventually just work up to the weight?

for deadlifts of course....

Do you use a different grip depending on straps vs without straps?
