I played baseball for 15 years and trained for that for my school team so I mainly started with specific workouts for forearms, core, and legs (I was a pitcher). When I started working out on my own, I didn't know much. It was upper body 2-3 times a week and lower body every week or 2. I think I normally lifted whatever I could for around 10 reps with shitty form. After high school I started researching a little more and learned enough on bodybuilding.com to build a base, but still didn't know how to maximize results.
Now let's back up a little.. I'm a heroin addict. So I went from 205lbs and 25-30% bf to about 190lbs 20% bf by the end of high school. Got hooked on dope and went to 135lbs 15% bf. I've been in and out of sobriety and working out for about 5 years now. This go-round I started at 165lbs ~15% bf and couldn't do a single push-up coming off dope. I have a year sober this month and have been dieting and exercising seriously this whole year and I'm at 194lbs ~12-14% bf. I was 182lbs ~10-12% bf before I started this bulk. I only give that story because it's not your typical process. I decided to change my life for good almost a year ago and using gear fell into my goals for myself and gives me something to achieve.
I was using short periodization of 1 week 12-15 reps, 1 week 9-11 reps, then 6-8 reps, then 3-5 reps. Then I'd go back to 12-15 reps and increase weights each week. I learned this from Jim Stoppani's Shortcut to Size. My diets I've stuck around 40% protein, 35% carbs, and 25% fats but I put a large focus on what kind of carbs I eat at certain times of day and that has helped me progress towards my goals at the time.
Now with the introduction of AAS and everything I've learned (I research every day and I'm still learning a lot every day) these techniques will change. I always kind of focused on bulking and cuttIng simultaneously when I was natty. Now I'm transitioning to separate bulking and cutting phases. I'm currently eating more than I've ever ate in my life, even when I was a chubby little fucker. But the macros and timing play the most important role on achieving my vision for myself. I'm also powerlifting for the first time ever. I want to increase my strength and bulk so after this cycle I can focus on hypertrophy and continue building muscle with my added strength until my next cycle starts.
